Description
This arrangement of “The Lord is My Light” uses the text from the hymnbook and marries it to an all-new tune by Rachel Mohlman. The melody is singable and straightforward. The composer offers multiple versions on her website. The versions for two high voices could be sung by two sopranos or a soprano and tenor (she offers them in both F and G to better suit individual ranges). There are also SA and SATB choral versions.
The piano accompaniment is simple and would be within the grasp of a less-experienced accompanist. Due to the simplicity of the accompaniment, the singers will need to be fairly confident on their parts. The accompaniment rarely mirrors the vocal lines. You can hear recordings of the parts at this site.
I think this arrangement offers a fresh take on a familiar hymn. Your congregation may listen with new ears. If you have given this arrangement a try, we’d love to hear about it in the comments section.
